Fraunhofer IKTS

Smart trade fair dashboard: Scan exhibits, information appears. Simple.

We have developed a digital trade fair dashboard for Fraunhofer IKTS that fundamentally modernises its trade fair presence. A native iOS/Android app uses RFID scanning to record each exhibit – and automatically opens the relevant information page on the web application. Intuitive for staff, technologically impressive for visitors.

The task

Background & Challenge

Fraunhofer IKTS presents a wide range of highly complex research exhibits at trade fairs. The previous approach was time-consuming for staff and often not sufficiently inviting for visitors:

  1. Manual provision of information: Information about the exhibits was presented using static materials. It was virtually impossible to update the content quickly and flexibly shortly before or during the trade fair.
  2. Lack of scalability: With a growing number of exhibits and various trade fair locations, centralised, structured management of presentation content was urgently required.
  3. Technological barriers for staff: Editors and exhibition staff needed to be able to update exhibit information independently and without any IT knowledge.
  4. Visitor experience: The trade fair presence needed to live up to Fraunhofer IKTS’s reputation for technological innovation – visually compelling and interactive.

The solution

Our solution & your contribution

We have developed a smart, two-stage system comprising a web application and a companion mobile app that optimises the entire trade fair operation.

The system at a glance: Real-time scanning & information page

  1. Scanning: A member of staff scans the RFID tag on the exhibit using the app on a smartphone or tablet.
  2. Display: The web application automatically opens the relevant information page for the exhibit.
  3. Done: No manual searching, no typing, no technical know-how required.

Further components:

  • Web application: Each exhibit has its own automatically generated information page featuring text, images, videos and interactive elements (3D models, diagrams).
  • RFID integration: Fully integrated RFID technology for fast, contactless scanning with real-time communication to the web application.
  • Flexible reuse: All exhibit pages can be seamlessly embedded into external Fraunhofer IKTS websites via iFrame.
